Draped Tops

women tops to wear with leggings The draped vest can be a tricky trend to pull off. However, it is also a trend that can be incorporated with almost any outfit, from casual to formal. The versatility of this look means it’s a good trend to try out this season. The difficulty comes because the drapey vest does not have much structure. You need to be careful that it doesn’t end up looking like you’ve simply draped an old length of fabric around your shoulders. For tips and tricks on how to wear the draped vest, see below.

Most draped vests do not have front closures like a normal vest does, and most of them also drape down much farther than a normal vest would. This gives a loose, laid back vibe, which means that it can be tempting to pair the draped vest with other loose laid-back pieces. The problem is that the draped vest does not have much shape. If you wear it over a baggy sweater or similarly shapeless top, you will look like a shapeless mound of fabric instead of a put-together fashionista who is on top of the trends.

Now that you know how not to wear one, here is how you should try to wear a draped vest: pick a vest that will not overwhelm your frame. If it drapes down too much lower than the pockets of your pants, it will end up looking more like a shawl and less like a vest. Also, be sure that you can still see your shape when you’re wearing your draped vest. This means choosing garments to go under it like a fitted sweater, and also making sure your pants or skirt fit your figure very well. Some ideas for things to wear beneath a draped vest:

draped top - A fitted tee: the fitted nature of a tee-shirt will help define your shape. It is a great piece for a casual take on your draped vest.

- A figure-flattering button down: for a more office-appropriate look, a button-down shirt that shows your figure is a great piece to pair beneath the vest, especially since many button-downs have structure built right into them.

- A turtle-neck sweater: a fitted (not tight, there’s a difference) turtleneck is a great way to show your curves beneath your draped vest. Try a turtleneck in a luxurious fabric like cashmere to bump the outfit up a few notches.

The draped vest can be a tricky trend to pull off, but as long as you are sure to define your shape beneath it, there’s no end to the outfits you can create with it.
