Gem Therapy

The captivating attraction of gemstones initially lies in their beauty, but strong undercurrents of otherworldly energy may ultimately be what stimulates our desire.

You've entered a boutique where, in your wanderings, you glance into a jewelry case. A radiant necklace catches your eye, luring you to try it on. As you hold it, the light reflects prisms of color. You admire the stone's shape and design and feel its easy weight as you clasp it around your neck. It fits perfectly, as if it were made for you. Elated, you buy the piece and wear it home. Impulse buy or fashion must-have? Is it just another beautiful bauble or has something been stirred?

The allure of gemstones is recorded throughout history, their lore enmeshed with virtually all cultural narratives, religions, and social classes. Shakespearean sonnets sprinkled with turquoise skies, coral lips, and diamond eyes, attest to the inspiration gems have provided to artists, lovers, and seers for centuries. Enthralling but cold, yet filled with the fire of life, gems possess a unique power of attraction. Their beauty invites contact and the connection is reinforced by instinctive reaction. Surprisingly, the good vibes you feel in the right piece of jewelry may have scientific correlations.

The human body is 80 percent water, a crystalline composition (remember snowflakes), essentially making us very large crystals. It is also worth noting that both gemstones and humans are characterized by harmonic frequencies (versus computers, cell phones, and modern appliances, whose inharmonic frequencies, some say, are partly to blame for the deterioration of our protective electromagnetic fields, causing physical disease). Further, the science of color therapy—another study in vibrational frequencies—has associated certain moods and emotions to specific shades, such as the loving warm energy of pink and the refreshing vigor of green.

Collectively, these facts indicate that gems can be profound partners in supporting and supplementing healing therapies. Spas and integrative medical facilities are more frequently enlisting and recommending the unique body-mind-spirit capabilities of gems, especially in combination with energy work such as reiki, psycho-energetic healing, and chakra balancing. The growing trend in personalized healing jewelry—with gem design and stones carefully selected by a gem therapist—also falls in step with this movement. The interaction of the high frequency jewelry touching the client's body and electromagnetic field is said to support, stabilize, and lift their frequency, particularly during times of change and transition.

As we become increasingly estranged from the great outdoors, our attraction to and need for the beauty and energy of the earth is a natural response. The late renowned gemologist, George Kunz, in referring to our attachment to gems, may have said it best, "True sentiment…is good for all mankind. The fancies generated by sentiment are helpful to us and make us happier, and happiness and health combined aid to evolve that other member of the triumvirate, wealth. Do we not often wish for the union of these three supreme blessings?"
